PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

In the course of picking and sorting for our bulk vintage Japanese kimono packages and fabrics by pieces throughout the year in Japan, we sometimes come across special early 20th Century Japanese textiles and treasures such as this futonji. We estimate this as from 1920s-1930s, possibly older; This was hand-sewn and dyed in a process called katazome, pre-dyed paste-resist indigo dyeing; This is a five-panel futonji, (futon/mattress cover,), made by hand-applied (tsutsugaki) paste resistance; Katazome is defined in Wikipedia as:

Katazome (型染め) is a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil, typically a rice flour mixture applied with a brush or a tool such as a palette knife.... (Wikipedia Page Here)

• Hand-Sewn total 5 panels  intact, hand-sewn together, with the last panel on the right composed of 2 smaller width half-panels.
  
  
• Fabric:  Cotton that is indigo-dyed in katazome stencil method, designs are on one side; Designs are of classic chrysanthemums, leaves and curlicue stems.
  
  
• Panels Measurements:  
  
  1. 4 Panels are 13.25 inches/33.7 cm wide, 64 inches / 162.56 cm long.
  2. 2 half panels are 6.5 inches /16.51 cm wide, 32 inches / 81.28 cm.
  
  
• Condition: Very good to excellent for its age of almost a century old; There are a few small white spots (dye process), and we show them in our last 2 close-ups, barely visible when viewing whole piece; clean and little patina to the white, so contrast of the indigo to white is still good.
