Fabric History/Pedigree: 1970s kasuri cotton pieces, from incompleted, deconstructed kasuri kimono.

Fabric Description: The source kimono was originally not completed, the fabric was partly hand-sewn together, yet was never finished nor used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from earlier times, 1970s.

Fabric Type: Kasuri (ikat), lightweight, slightly translucent, stiff; very dark indigo blue (almost black) background color fabric with light aqua-blue and blue-gray figures: double rings and flowers, other colors are burgundy-red, cobalt-blue and yellow; because of these images, this type of Japanese kasuri (ikat) is sometimes called 'e-gasuri' (lit. image-kasuri); Please see close-ups; same on both sides.

Condition: Excellent; Still slightly firm, the fabric softens with wash. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.

Notes:

This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia ); Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques are used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:

...a Japanese word for fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the fabric. It is an ikat technique. Kasuri is weft ikat; the warp threads are solid color, and the weft thread is resist-tied in a specific pattern and dyed with indigo to form a picture when the cloth is woven. Japanese ikats are generally weft ikats or double ikats.
