Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1970s; background color is dark indigo with figures/designs in pale blue and light blue-gray; this is of the type called E-Gasuri (lit. picture-kasuri) because the kasuri is dyed-woven with images, in this case, two types of flowers: one a blossom, probably a chrysanthemum, the other is stem, leaves and small rounded flowers; There are also samll dabs of mustard-yellow and red at various places (please see close-ups).
Condition: Excellent; Still firm, the fabric softens with wash. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
