Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1960s; fabric is thin/translucent with a background color of indigo-black with fuzzy figures in diagonal grid, rows and columns of 2 inches/ 5.08cm squared rhombic (4-sided diamond) figures; these diamonds are filled alternately with small diamond or square shapes; the lattice effect is caused by the light-blue-gray pinstripes creating the lines throughout; colors of designs: of blue, mustard yellow, green,and red; also, the tone of the inner fuzzy diamond shapes is brighter pale-aqua-blue than the lines; (please see close-ups).
Condition: Excellent; Still firm, the fabric softens with multiple washes. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
