Fabric History/Pedigree: 1960s kasuri found as partial deadstock roll.
Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from earlier times.
Fabric Type: Kasuri (ikat), lightweight, translucent, stiff; very dark indigo blue (almost black) background color fabric with large flowers motif; flowers are formed by 3 arcs on each side with a geometric center; Arrangement of motif elements is a symmetrical diagonal configuration; except for the geometric blocks (flower centers), all other designs are in a light gray-blue color; because of these images, this type kasuri is sometimes called 'e-gasuri' (lit. image-kasuri); Please see close-ups; same on both sides.
Condition: Excellent; Still slightly firm, the fabric softens with wash. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia ); Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques are used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
