Fabric History/Pedigree: 1980s deadstock vintage Japanese Kasuri (ikat) of the E-Gasuri (Lit. image-kasuri) Type, found with a lot of partial rolls and pieces.
Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (e-gasuri ikat) cotton fabric from the 1980s; fabric is lightweight, slightly translucent, with a background color of dark indigo blue and gray checkerboard pattern; The rectangles measure 3.75 inches/ 9.53 cm X 4 inches/10.16 cm, alternating designs of classic rendered tortoises and bamboo; colors varying from pale aqua blue to grays; same on both sides;please see close-ups.
Condition: Excellent; Still firm, the fabric softens with multiple washes. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
