Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from earlier times.
Fabric Type: Kasuri (ikat), lightweight, translucent, stiff; very dark indigo blue (almost black) background color fabric with designs of rows and columns of larger fuzzy ovals (3inches /7.62cm X 1 inch / 2.54cm) and fuzzy orbs, all about 1 inch/ 2.54cm tall; the ovals alternate from light-aqua blue with dark gray centers to blue-gray with darker centers (Please view our close-ups); the arrangement of the grid elements' pattern aligns in 90 degree angles; this is a fairly common sort of design;; same on both sides.
Condition: Excellent; Still slightly firm, the fabric softens with wash. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia ); Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques are used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
