Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1960s; fabric is thin/translucent, stiff with background color of indigo-blue/black with figures/designs in pale blue, light blue-gray, burgundy-red, and mustard yellows; this is of the type called E-Gasuri (lit. picture-kasuri) because the kasuri is dyed-woven with images, in this case, of sparrows-in-flight with hash-tag like figures irregularly spaced; Largest elements are 1 to 1.25 inches / 2.54cm to 37.75mm, the sparrows are .75 inch /19.05mm (please see close-ups).
Condition: Excellent; Still firm, the fabric softens with multiple washes. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
