Fabric History/Pedigree: 1990s, found as deadstock roll.

Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1990s.

Fabric Type: Kasuri (ikat), lightweight, stiff; black background color fabric that has a hint of indigo color (in low light fabric looks black); with large-scale geometric designs being rows and columns of alternating geometric shapes; these figures are 3 inches X 2 inches (7.62 cm X 5.08 cm) for the larger ones, and 1.5 inches X 2.5 inches ( 38.1mm X 6.4 cm) for the smaller figures; designs are rendered with lines in a very pale light aqua-blue(looks white in brighter light), and with red squares at centers of the larger shapes; (Please see close-ups); same on both sides.

Condition: Excellent (still firm, softens with washing -- requires special washing instructions -- please let us know if you need them).

Notes:

This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:

...a Japanese word for fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the fabric. It is an ikat technique. Kasuri is weft ikat; the warp threads are solid color, and the weft thread is resist-tied in a specific pattern and dyed with indigo to form a picture when the cloth is woven. Japanese ikats are generally weft ikats or double ikats.
